The Do's and Don'ts of Helping Your Client File an Insurance Claim

The Do's and Don'ts of Helping Your Client File an Insurance Claim

When you work as an independent insurance agent, you may come across clients who ask you to help them with their insurance claims. Helping your client file the claim may seem like the right thing to do, but it is not an efficient use of your time and will set a bad precedent. That’s why it’s important to follow these guidelines on what to do when a client asks for help filing an insurance claim.

Do Advise if It Is in the Client's Best Interest to File a Claim

Where you are able to lend a hand to your client is by evaluating the situation so they can determine if they should file a claim or not. If, after research and assessment, it has been deemed that they should file a claim, refer them to their carrier's claims specialist. The representative will be able to guide them through the rest of the filing process.

Don't Assist in the Filing Process

As your clients' insurance agent, it is your responsibility to provide guidance and advice when they need it, which is why you should give guidance on whether to file a claim. This does not extend to help with the time-consuming filing process, and you have no influence on the outcome. Your time is better spent helping clients with needs that are within your power to control.
